Thoubal, August 07 2024:
In yet another case of artificial flooding caused by filling up of drainage system while taking up developmental works of Asian Highway No 1 and lackadaisical attitude of the authorities concerned, Khangabok Sanilou Leikai in Thoubal district lies inundated for more than three years.
The artificial flooding has been causing immense inconveniences to its residents who claimed that their right to life is violated.
In view of the plights of the residents of the locality, they sought immediate attention of the Chief Minister to address the issue at the earliest for their well-being.
Addressing media persons during a press meet held at Khangabok Sanilou Leikai today, Khangabok Part I Ward No 6 former Member Ningthoujam Kabita urged the Chief Minister to look into this grave issue at the earliest and take up immediate measures to address the issue to alleviate the suffering of the residents of this said locality.
She expressed discontentment that no effective measures have been taken up till now to solve the issue in spite of filing repeated complaints to the relevant authorities.
She alleged that the existing drainage systems were filled up while taking up developmental works for Asian Highway by Green Infra Project Ltd which is taking up the work under National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL).
Due to filling up of the drainages, around 20 households of Khangabok Sanilou Leikai remain flooded throughout the year, she said.
Highlighting the plights of these residents, Kabita said that the residents have been living in a pitiable condition in an unhygienic environment due to the flooding.
She went on to state that the residents are facing significant challenges to get clean and safe water for drinking and other essential needs.
Since most of them belong to poor households, they do not have the privilege to buy water for their daily use, she remarked.
In addition to the above, the stagnated water has become a breeding ground for many diseases which is detrimental for the residents, she added.
Kabita further stated that the Deputy Commissioner Thoubal and DGM of NHIDCL have been apprised of this serious issue multiple times through written complaints however there has been no positive response which is really unfortunate.
Therefore she urged the Chief Minister and authorities concerned to look into the matter and take up appropriate measures by constructing a proper drainage system and pump out the water at the earliest to resolve the plights of the residents of the locality.
