Shija Hospital observes World Breastfeeding Week 2026

Shija Hospitals & Research Institute, in collaboration with the Breastfeeding Promotion Alliance of Manipur, observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 at Shija Auditorium under the theme "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works" .
The programme was supported by TNAI, PAM, IOGS, BPNI, IMA and WABA.
Dr Kaikho Lajeo, Consultant Pediatrician, delivered the welcome address.
In the keynote, Dr Meenakshi Moirangthem, Consultant Pediatrician, highlighted the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
She spoke on the roles of foremilk and hindmilk, benefits of mother's milk, proper attachment techniques, feeding practices, and the role of caregivers in supporting nursing mothers.
Dr James Elangbam, Secretary, BPAM, said sustained advocacy by the alliance has encouraged organisations to strengthen maternity leave policies, with some extending leave to six months.
Dr Babita Chingakham stressed that mother's milk is vital for a healthy generation and that infant feeding education is part of the nursing curriculum.
CMD Dr Palin Khundongbam reaffirmed Shija Hospitals' commitment as a mother-friendly workplace, noting 133 days of maternity leave with plans to extend it to six months, and a creche facility for working mothers.
BPAM President Dr Aribam Ibotombi Sharma urged participants to spread awareness in communities.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr B Ayesha Shainaaz.
