Imphal, October 05 2026:
In the column "Hoi Polloi and Mundanity" by Yenning, titled "Thirty-Six Names: Manipur at the Asian Games, and the gap between talent and medals", published on 4 Octobe 2026, it was stated that Sanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma was not in the men's hockey squad for the final against Malaysia and did not receive a medal.
This is incorrect.
Nilakanta Sharma was part of the Indian team that beat Malaysia 5-1 in the final and won the gold medal, his second successive Asian Games gold.
Manipur's medal count at the Games is therefore five, two gold, two silver, and one bronze, and the women athletes brought three of the five medals.
The error is regretted.
