Imphal, June 04 2026:
A two-day Regional UGI Standardisation and Advanced Diagnostic Workshop aimed at early detection of gastrointestinal cancers using Japanese technology began today at the Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (ILDS), Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi.
Around 25 doctors from hospitals across the Northeast are attending the workshop.
Prof Noriya Uedo, Vice Director of the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Osaka International Cancer Institute, Japan, conducted live demonstrations on UGI endoscopy and detection of oesophageal and gastric cancers.
Speaking on the sidelines, Dr N Suraj Kumar, Head of Gastroenterology at ILDS Imphal, said the Northeast records the country's highest incidence of stomach cancer.
Nearly 80% of patients present at advanced stages, whereas in Japan about 75% of cases are detected at Stage I and treated in time, with only around 10% diagnosed at Stage II .
"The situation here is the opposite.
Most patients come late, when treatment options are limited and outcomes are poor" .
Dr Suraj said.
He stressed that adopting Japanese technology and expertise is crucial for early diagnosis.
Dr Suraj added that the initiative will benefit not just Manipur but the entire Northeast, as trained doctors will take the knowledge back to their respective States for wider application.
