Imphal, March 04 2025:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has called for a collective action to restore peace in the State, 'despite some groups resisting the Centre's peace initiatives' .
WMC, in a statement issued by its secretary general (CEC) Yambem Arun Meetei, said that there is a limit to suffering and the madness that has gripped Manipur must come to an end.
Saying that the ongoing violence has claimed nearly three hundred lives and devastated thousands more, the Council added that this tragic chapter has persisted for far too long.
WMC thanked the Central Government's intervention in containing the conflict, 'even though it came much later than it should have' .
However, it is unfortunate that certain groups are resisting the peace efforts initiated by the Centre, the Council said without taking any name.
Saying that these protests, driven by those who seek to destabilize Manipur, are not unexpected, WMC added that these groups have long been emboldened as they were pampered and spoiled by the Assam Rifles.
The Council expressed belief that protesters will eventually realize their actions are futile.
Maintaining that the wounds inflicted on both communities are deep, leaving scars that will take time to heal, WMC added that the history of Manipur should not be taken lightly.
The Council also said that they will not allow the history of Manipur to be rewritten by violence and hatred.
Appealing to those who fuel the conflict to accept reality and put an end to the madness besetting Manipur, WMC maintained that violence has its limits.
No lasting solution to the crisis can be built upon chaos and bloodshed, it reasoned while maintaining that the hard lessons of this crisis, however, must not be forgotten.
Urging the Central Government to protect the lives and property of all citizens, regardless of region or religious background, the Council maintained that the legislators in Manipur must also take full responsibility to restore law and order without any compromise.
Further appealing to the civil society organizations of all the communities and political leaders to play their part in rebuilding peace, WMC added that securing a better future for the coming generations must be the collective duty of all .
