From Tikendrajit to Rani Gaidinliu: Students enact icons in NSD workshop

Imphal, June 03 2026: A 30-day Children's Theatre Workshop is being held in six schools across Imphal East and Imphal West districts, organised by the National School of Drama's Children Theatre Wing and Samvardhinee Nyas Sanskriti Kala Darshan, Manipur.

Workshop Director Dr Sanabam Thaninleima said the programme targets children aged 8 to 16.For Central schools it runs from May 11 to June 9, while for State schools it is scheduled from May 25 to June 25.Participating schools are Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy, Nongmeibung; Wangkhei High School, Wangkhei; Meitei Mayek High School, Kongba Road; Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, Lamphelpat; Praja High School, Lamsang; and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Avasiya Vidyalaya, Uripok Lamboikhongnangkhong.

During the workshop, students are staging one play each: 'Rani Gaidinliu' at Ananda Singh Hr Sec Academy, 'Nupi Lan' at Wangkhei High School, 'Ahilyabai' at Meitei Mayek High School, 'Tikendrajit' at KV No 1 Lamphelpat, 'Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose' at Netaji Avasiya Vidyalaya, and 'Paona Brajabasi' at Praja High School.

Dr Thaninleima noted that the workshop helps shy children gain confidence, understand their duties, discover hidden talents, and develop personality.

Since the plays are based on historical narratives, they also help students learn about Manipur's past and inculcate positive social values.
