Pony orgns demand action against butchering pony

Imphal, August 02 2026: Several organisations associated with Manipuri Pony and Polo have demanded stringent action against theft and butchering of pony.

Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today on behalf of seven different organisations including Manipuri Pony and Polo Welfare Association and Manipuri Pony Owners' Association, Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association general secretary K Dhanachandra said that the State Government and authorities concerned need to take up strong actions to protect the endangered Manipuri pony from being slaughtered.

There are a little over 1000 Manipuri Pony in the State as per a report of the Directorate of Veterinary.

But today there are less than 1000 ponies after many of these horses have been stolen, he said.

He said that some people have been stealing this native, rare and endangered horse species, slaughtering them and selling the meat.

Even though several reports have been filed with police regarding stealing and slaughtering of ponies, police have not been taking any concrete action, Dhanachandra said.

He said that the dwindling number of pony has rendered all the campaign and efforts of conserving pony and promoting polo meaningless.

Already nine individuals suspected to be involved in stealing and slaughtering ponies have been identified and complaints have been lodged with police against them, he said.

It has been decided to ban the nine individuals from participating in any tournament organised by the seven associations, he said.

Dhanachandra said that members of the seven associations, pony owners and pony lovers will soon launch special drives at meat shops to check if any one of them is selling horse meat.
