Shutter gates installation along Nambul River begins

Imphal, August 01 2025: In a significant step toward flood mitigation, the installation of new shutter gates along the Nambul River, stretching from Amudon to Kangabam Leikai has officially commenced.

The stretch covers approximately 10 gates in total.

The initiative is being executed under the supervision of Sagolband Assembly Constituency MLA RK Imo Singh and carried out by the Sagolband Constituency Progressive Committee (SCPC), with a focus on longterm flood control and infrastructure sustainability.

As per a release issued by the office of the Sangolband AC MLA, the old shutter gates, which were severely rusted and dilapidated, had been a recurring cause of flooding in the locality.

In their place, the newly installed gates will feature rubber linings at the bottom to prevent water leakage during periods of heavy flow, ensuring better control and protection for nearby residential areas.

Speaking to the media, RK Jiten Singh, Corporator of Ward No 7, appealed to the public residing in the surrounding areas to refrain from littering or discarding plastic bottles and waste into the river or along its banks.

He highlighted that such actions can obstruct the proper closing of the shutters, allowing floodwaters to breach the gates and defeat the purpose of the installation.

In addition to the shutter gate work, construction of a new retaining wall will also commence at the Moirang Leirak crematorium area, where a portion of the existing wall built nearly 15 to 20 years ago has significantly weakened over time and is no longer dependable.

The new retaining wall will help prevent erosion and offer greater protection from future floods.

Further, additional retaining walls will be constructed along other vulnerable sections of the Nambul River at Amudon, as well as along the Imphal River stretch near Babupara, to enhance flood protection and erosion control across multiple localities.
