Public meeting calls for reforms in Meitei ceremonial practices

Imphal, February 01 2026: A public meeting to deliberate on the impact of deteriorating practices and customs in Meitei ceremonial rituals, was held on Sunday at Asha Community Hall, Hiyanglam.

As per a release issued by EYOL, the meeting was jointly organised by Enat Yokkhatpa Luptin (EYOL), Manipur in collaboration with SEDO, the apex body of 11 clubs of Hiyanglam constituency.

The meeting was attended by Longjamcha Sanathoi, vice-president of EYOL; B Memma, ASHA Area Meira Paibi; B Bhorot, ASHA advisor Board member; E Thambalnganbi EDA Area Meira Paibi; among others as presidium members.

Several resolutions were collectively passed during the meeting, foremost among them being the support and adoption of the August 10, 2024 resolution passed by the people of the State to uphold the traditional customs and practices of Meitei society.

The gathering also expressed support for the cultural regeneration and resistance movement spearheaded by EYOL, to constitute a committee comprising representatives from every local club, meira paibi, and singlup to safeguard and promote authentic Meitei traditional customs and practices in rituals and ceremonies.

The resolution also called for restricting the introduction of "inappropriate practices" in traditional rituals and for avoiding excessive expenditure during weddings and other ceremonies.

Practices such as cake cutting, exchange of rings and costly photo and video sessions, expensive make-ups, and extravagant spending on Potloi were urged to be discontinued, while emphasizing the use of traditional attire and locally produced items, and avoiding "seithaba" competition and the custom of "bhabok mamai taba" during such events.
