Cultural workshop for displaced students kicks off

Imphal, February 27 2026: A 30-day cultural performance studies workshop for displaced students commenced today at the Irom Meijrao Model English School Hall.

The workshop, aimed at imparting knowledge of traditional Manipuri culture to the young generation affected by the recent conflict, is a joint initiative by several local organisations.

The initiative is being organised by the Irom Meijrao Model English School in collaboration with the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB), Government Dance College, and the Irom Meijrao Women for Cultural Centre.

The inaugural function was graced by dignitaries, including G Dharmadash Sharma, Joint Director, Department of Art & Culture, Manipur; Ph Gunachandra Sharma, Manipur State Kala Akademi Awardee; Sivadutta Luwang, Member Secretary, LSTB; L Tarpon, advisor, Manipur State Shumang Leela Council; and Hawaibam Bhudi, acting president, MSSLC .

Approximately 56 students ranging from Class 1 to Class 10 are participating in the workshop.

At the event, G Dharmadhas emphasized the importance of learning basic cultural elements such as Manipuri dance, song, Pung, Leela, drama, and martial arts.

Sh Hemanta, project director of the workshop, revealed that over 250 displaced students from the May 2023 conflict had previously camped at the location for their education.

While many have since returned home, the remaining 56 students are participating in this workshop.

He explained that since these children have been living in the area for nearly three years, it is crucial to teach them the various activities they would have learned in their home environment.

Experts from the Government Dance College and the LSTB, along with other specialists, will conduct daily classes.
