Operation Thunder launched in Chandel to curb illegal trafficking of wildlife

Chandel, September 24 2026: Operation Thunder was launched in Chandel district today by conducting surprise checks at vulnerable locations to curb the illegal trafficking and killing of wildlife.

The surprise checks and search operations were led by N Deepa, Range Forest Officer Chandel in collaboration with Chandel Police under the aegis of Dr N Munal Meitei, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Chandel.

Speaking in connection with the drive.

Dr N Munal Meitei said that Operation Thunder has been conducted as per the directives of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Government of India to check illegal trafficking and killing of wild animals and birds.

However, no one has been apprehended in relation to illegal trafficking of wildlife or relevant activities.

The DFO Chandel further informed that similar operations will be conducted at various locations and subdivisions in Chandel district such as Chakpikarong, Khengjoy with the help of the District Police and Assam Rifles.

It may be noted that Operation Thunder will be conducted as a part of the upcoming Wildlife Week observation scheduled to be held from October 2 till 8.He also appealed to all to work collectively to protect wildlife and to refrain from wildlife trafficking activities.
