Resolving illegal immigration imperative: Sanayaima

Imphal, July 20 2025: Former UNLF chairman Ningthemcha Sanayaima on Sunday cautioned that conducting a census in Manipur without first addressing the issue of illegal immigration will have severe implications, particularly for the indigenous population.

Speaking at a patriotic poem recitation competition organised at KYC community hall, Kakwa Laishram Selungba Leikai by Patriots' Day Observance Committee Manipur, Sanayaima pointed out that many of the issues confronting Manipur stem from the failure of the people in electing the right representatives.

He criticised both electors and elected representatives, saying that while voters often cast their ballots for short-term benefits, those elected fail to show sincerity in working for the welfare of the people and society.

As a result, democracy in Manipur is in decline and seemingly lost.

He stressed that both the public and their representatives have a crucial role to play in reviving democratic values in Manipur.

In his address, Patriots' Day Observance Committee Manipur vice-president Waikhom Amuchou Meitei said that the competition was organised to instil a sense of patriotism among the youth, especially in light of the prevailing situation in Manipur.

He said that young people must understand the role played by forefathers in protecting the state's identity and integrity.

The competition was held in three categories for students of Class 3 to 12, with a total of 90 participants.

Committee president L Chandrakumar presided over the event.

Jury members included Sahitya Akademi awardee Thokchom Ibohanbi, critic, writer and DM University associate professor Dr Longjam Sharatchandra, and retired principal of N Tomchou Higher Secondary School K Gangarani.
