World Heritage Day observed

In observance of World Heritage Day, Art & Culture Commissioner M Joy flagged off a "Heritage Tour" from Kangla Uttra today.
The event was organised by the Manipur State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture under the theme, "Heritage Under Threat From Disasters and Conflicts".
Speaking to the media, M Joy called for collective efforts to ensure that urbanization initiatives do not damage or put heritage sites at risk.
He asserted that everyone is obligated to preserve historical places that have a close link with the State's history, tradition and culture.
Stressing on the need to preserve historical monuments, M Joy stated that communities living in the vicinity of such important landmarks are also responsible for safeguarding them.
Highlighting man-made threats to such historical monuments, he asserted that urbanization works that put these sites at risk should be stopped.
K Dinamani, Director, Art & Culture, said that a large section of the population have no idea about "heritage sites" and emphasized the need to spread awareness about the topic.
He also urged scholars to delve deeper into the heritage sites of Manipur.
Sashikanta Sharma, Superintendent, Manipur State Archaeology encouraged students taking part in the tour to share the stories and knowledge they gained with their friends.
During the tour, 100 students and teachers from Manipur University and Manipur University of Culture visited more than 7 heritage sites with N Indramahi, president of Historical & Cultural Research Centre and Research Forum Manipur, as the tour guide.
