Foul-smelling canned-fish tins impounded

Imphal, January 18 2013: Based on a complaint, personnel of Food Safety Standards unit reportedly raided a grocery shop located at Nongmeibung bazar from where 25 tins of canned-fish products were impounded for questionable contents.

Speaking to newspersons today at the Lamphel office of Directorate of Health Services, under which the Unit operates, Deputy Food Safety Commissioner Tekcham Bro-jendro Khaba said a customer lodged a complaint about foul smell when a canned fish labelled 'Mackerels' was opened for preparation.

Consequently at around 7.20 pm yesterday a team was deputed to the Nongmeibung Bazar shop from where the food item was reportedly purchased, said the Deputy Commissioner adding that during preliminary investigation some more of the canned fish emanated similar foul smell.

informing that in all 25 cans were impounded from the shop for further investigation at a Kolkata food testing laboratory, he asserted that in case the food item was found to have non-prescribed or harmful ingredients the guilty ones are liable to face legal action.

It is said that the seized canned fish tins had October 2012 as the manufacture date with an advisory note that they should be consumed within 18 months.

Noting that the said food items are yet to expire, Brojendro, nevertheless pointed out that the date of manufacture was inscribed on the paper label rather than stamping the same on the can.

Further highlighting that rust could be detected on the cans, he said investigation will certainly lead to whether or not the Karnataka-based manufacturing company had violated food safety norms.

Brojendro also urged the general public to immediately contact the Unit in case similar defective food items are detected.
