Major Chongtha Miya Memorial Day observed

Imphal, January 17 2026: United Chongthas observed the 118th Major Chongtha Miya Memorial Day, 2026 at the Memorial Complex ofExiled Heroes, BT Park, Imphal today.

The event, themed "Reclaiming the History of the Manipur War of Independence, 1891", honored the valiant freedom fighter Major Chongtha Miya, who led the Manipuris against the British during the Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 .

The observance was graced by dignitaries, including Archarya K Brajamani Sharma, Dr Ch Narendra Singh, Ch Monon Singh.

SANULAL's president Th Ibethoi, United Chongthas' advisor Ch Lukhoi Meitei and patron Ch Manglemjao Meitei.

The event began with a ritual prayer by Maiba (priest) of the Manipur Pandit Loishing followed by the blowing of the invocatory conch and sounding of the gong.

A large number of people led by members of United Chingthas also offered floral tributes at a photograph of Major Chongtha Miya.

Speaking on the occasion, Chongtham Romen, convenor of the Organising Committee, urged the State Government to acknowledge the contributions of Major Chongtha Miya and observe January 17 as a State Holiday.

He also appealed to the people to follow the footsteps of the heroic forefathers and fight unitedly for the welfare of the State.

As part of the event, the "Miya Singh Major Warrior Award 2026" was presented to Nandita Chongtham of Sagolband Mantri Leikai and Chongtham Loyalakpi Chanu of Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak, recognising their achievements.

A souvenir entitled, "A Hero Who Fought Against Colonial Rule" was also released.

The event emphasized the importance of acknowledging the heroic sons of the land and fighting unitedly for the State's welfare.
