Major Chongtha Miya remembered

The 117th death anniversary of Major Chongtha Miya was observed at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The Major Chongtha Miya Commemoration cum Miya Singh Major Warrior Award Presentation event was conducted under the aegis of United Chongthas.
It was graced by dignitaries, including Ch Manglemjao Meetei, chief patron, United Chongthas; Yumnam ningol Thingnam ongbi Ibethoi, chief advisor, Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup ( SANULAL) and Chongtham Luukhoi Meitei, advisor, United Chongthas.
The event began with the offering of floral tributes to the photograph of Major Chongtha Miya by the family members of Major Chongtha Miya.
Speaking on the occasion, Chongtham Romen, convenor of United Chongthas, said that Major Chongtha Miya was one of the valiant freedom fighters who led the Manipuris against the British during the Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 and fought bravely against the mighty Britishers to protect his motherland.
Stating that the present generation should acknowledge the contributions of such a heroic son of the land, he urged the State Government to observe the death anniversary of Major Chongtha Miya at the State level and declare January 17 as a State Holiday.
Romen also appealed to the people to follow the footsteps of the heroic forefathers and fight unitedly for the welfare of the State.
As part of the event, the Miya Singh Major Warrior Award 2025 was presented posthumously to Saikhom Sanjit Kumar @ Subol, who achieved martyrdom in a battle fought against Chin-Kuki-Zo militants at Kadangband on June 10, 2023.The award was received by Sanjit Kumar's mother Saikhom Pumimashi of Uripok Achom Leikai.
