Lamka, May 16:
Recalling sacrifices made by its dedicated youths for the cause of the Hmar movement, the Hmar community observed Martyrs' Day today.
Traditional shawls were hoisted atop every household and establishment owned by the community to commemorate the day, while the main observance was held somewhere here under the aegis of the armed outfit Hmar Peoples Convention (D).
A statement issued by the outfit recalled the first armed encounter the erstwhile HPC has had in Chekarcham of Cachar in Assam State on May 16, 1989 wherein two of its cadres Lalhuoplien and Lienhmingthang lost their lives.
HPC has signed an agreement with the Mizoram government yet the Hmars are still being denied their due privileges, said the discontented HPC (D) adding that until such time when the Hmars enjoy their liberties the HPC (D) will continue its movement.
The outfit also made an appeal to all for acknowledging their ongoing movement and to honour the day that is solely earmarked for its Martyrs.
