Manipur Loumi Lup (MLL) convened a meeting of farmers at Irawat Bhavan today to discuss the prevailing situation in the State, including the inability to cultivate paddy fields in the foothill areas and the repeated attacks on civilians by Kuki armed groups and their associates.
Following the meeting, the farmers attempted to take out a protest march, however, the same was prevented by security personnel.
Speaking to media persons, MLL secretary H Ibobi said that the issues affecting Manipur were raised during the National Council meeting of the All India Kisan Sabha held at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on July 11 and 12.Stating that the participants took serious note of the ongoing crisis in Manipur, he said the meeting adopted a resolution to organise protest demonstrations across the country today in solidarity with the people of Manipur and to demand the restoration of peace.
Manipur has remained in a constant state of unrest due to the unlawful' demands being pursued by the Kukis through violent means.
He said that all communities in Manipur are suffering as highways have become inaccessible due to ethnic tensions, while paddy fields in the foothill areas remain abandoned.
The Government of India (Gol) has been turning a blind eye to the crisis in Manipur, while the State Government has been acting like a puppet, he charged.
He urged the Government to abrogate the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact, deport illegal immigrants and restore normalcy in the State.
Apart from the conflict, he expressed concern over the unavailability of water for irrigation.
He urged the Government to either declare Manipur as a drought hit State or make other arrangements to provide irrigation facilities at the earliest.
