Imphal, August 13 2026:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 135th Patriots' Day at its office complex in Imphal today.
MPCC president and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, AICC's Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam, CLP leader K Meghachandra, and many other party members paid floral tributes to the memorial of Bir Tikendrajit and a photo of Thangal General.
Speaking on the occasion, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi said the Patriots' Day is observed to remember patriots, Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General who were hanged by the British on this day in 1891 at Pheidabung.
He wished for the Patriots' Day to instill a sense of patriotism among the people of different communities, and called on them to protect Manipur's integrity.
Even as Manipur is part of independent India, there has emerged a question whether or not the State and its people are enjoying the rights granted to citizens by the Constitution, Ibobi said, apparently referring to the situation in the State due to prolonged conflict since May 3, 2023 .
"Our forefathers fought against the mighty British.
Even in defeat, they didn't bow down their heads.
Their sacrifice and courage should guide us to protect the State and its integrity," Ibobi said, calling on people to unite.
