Ram seeks MoRTH intervention to improve highways

Ukhrul, August 12 2026: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has sought immediate intervention of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to improve NH-102A and NH-202, the major lifelines of Ukhrul, Kamjong and Senapati districts.

The deteriorating conditions of the highways has severely affected transportation, public movement, trade, emergency services and the daily lives of thousands of people of the districts, said Ram, seeking MoRTH's attention to accelerate ongoing construction and maintenance works.

Enclosing photographic evidence of the dilapidated highways, Ram's representation flagged the condition of a roughly 15-Km stretch from Tolloi Junction to Dungrei Junction.

The MLA highlighted that a major landslide along the NH-102A near Phaibung has restricted traffic since June 23 .

Citing risks pose by heavy rainfalls and landslides, Ram proposed rigid pavement for the Ukhrul Town sector, and called for comprehensive landslide mitigation measures, including breast and retaining walls, gabion structures, hydroseeding, jute/coir matting, soil nailing, shotcrete, rock bolting, wire mesh and improved drainage systems.

He further urged MoRTH for immediate resumption of the long-delayed double-laning of the approximately 200-Km Finch Corner-Tengnoupal stretch of the NH-102A .

Meanwhile, the NHIDCL status report indicates substantial progress in several NH-102A packages.

The 41.4-Km UTT Package-II has achieved 80.80 per cent physical progress, while the 31.02-Km Package-III is at 94.01 per cent and the 23.955-Km Package-IV at 97 per cent.

All three are now projected for completion by December 2026 .

On the NH-202, Ram highlighted the Lower Hundung-Choithar sector, alleging that repair and maintenance had not been undertaken for nearly five years due to tender-related delays, termination of work orders and Court interventions.

Ram urged the MoRTH and NHIDCL to adopt a more proactive, professional and people-sensitive approach and ensure that administrative, land-acquisition and contractual hurdles do not continue to hold up the lifelines of the hill districts.

Notably, the NHIDCL project status shows varying levels of progress across the Imphal-Ukhrul-Jessami corridor.

Package-I, covering 16.9 Km, has reached 88.96 per cent physical progress, with completion now expected by December 2026.Package-II, covering 14.07 Km, is at 98.12 per cent and is expected to be completed by November 2026 .

While Package-III remains affected by land acquisition issues, Package-IV has been entangled in litigation before the High Court of Manipur following termination of contractors.

Package-V has achieved 14.50 per cent progress, while Package-VI stands at 26.22 per cent.
