Depression cases rising under BJP rule, claims Moirangthem Hemanta

Thoubal, April 12 2026: Former Minister Moirangthem Hemanta has strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Manipur, asserting that the state would continue to suffer under its rule, while expressing confidence that the Indian National Congress could "save Manipur" if voted to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.

He made the remarks while attending a Congress Workers' Meet of Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituency Polling Station no 34/39 held at Phundrei Muslim village.

The programme was organised by the Wangjing Tentha Block Congress Committee.

The meeting was attended by party leaders including Wangjing Tentha Block Congress Committee president Shagolsem Gopeshor, along with members from various blocks.

Addressing the gathering, Hemanta alleged that the present BJP government has failed to resolve issues ranging from minor grievances to major crises affecting the state.

He remarked that even administrative measures such as leadership changes or imposition of President's Rule were not sufficient to bring the situation under control.

He further alleged bias on the part of the Government of India and expressed concern over the lack of response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in incidents involving the loss of lives in Manipur.

He claimed that despite being the leader of the country, he had failed to prevent loss of human lives, and under BJP rule, cases of depression among the people have been increasing day by day.

On the issue of illegal immigration, Hemanta stated that failure to identify illegal immigrants prior to conducting a census could pose a serious threat to the indigenous population of the state.

He urged people to remain united and vigilant, adding that the Congress party stands for equality and does not discriminate on the basis of religion.

During the meeting, a resolution was adopted proposing the nomination of Moirangthem Hemanta as the Congress candidate for Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituency in the forthcoming elections.
