Bishnupur, October 10 2026:
A sit-in protest was staged at Naranseina Keithel today as part of the series of protest demonstrations led by the five civil society organisations across the State.
The five CSOs namely All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women Voluntary Organisation (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and Manipur Student Federation (MSF).
The five CSOs have been leading protest demonstrations demanding updation and implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year before any census operations, rejection of recently concluded 'flawed' Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, expedite rehabilitation of IDPs and resolution of the ongoing Manipur crisis at the earliest and withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958.Speaking in connection with the protest, Sorokhaibam Sanjoy AMUCO president and convenor of the 5 CSOs alleged that the deployment of the large number of Central Armed Forces personnel in the State ever since the outbreak of Manipur crisis in May 2023 is 'a step to crackdown on the indigenous people and not to contain the violence' .
He stressed that the innocent civilians have been reeling under immense pain and suffering due to the ongoing crisis and expressed dismay that the Government is unwilling to resolve the crisis and pave path for restoration for peace and harmony.
He urged the Government to withdraw the armed forces personnel from Manipur since they have failed in containing the violence and protecting the people.
In today's protest organised by the meira paibis of the region and United Clubs Organisation Bishnupur District (UCOBID), the participants used placards which read 'Don't kill innocent people', 'NRC only way to save indigenous people', 'Reject SIR 2026', 'Resolve Manipur crisis', 'Withdraw AFSPA 1958', 'Rehabilitate IDPs at the earliest' etc and raised similar slogans.
