Two Asian Giant Tortoises rescued

Tamenglong, September 06 2025:
Two Asian Giant Tortoises (Manouria emy) were rescued and handed over to the DFO, Tamenglong Kharibam Hitler Singh, RFO Tamenglong Joel Gangmei and Tamenglong Forest Division staff.
Locally known as Leikang Thenggu in Manipuri and Guiphop in Rongmei, the tortoises were handed overby Paul Nangsha, SDO of Tousem.
The first tortoise, weighing around 16 kg, was rescued from Vanchenphai village.
The second, weighing approximately 5 kg, was brought in by a local youth, Simeon Gangmei, from Tongtao village.

Both tortoises will be transferred to the Manipur Zoological Park, where Director Laishram Birmangol Singh will oversee their care for strengthening the Artificial Incubation of Asian Giant Tortoise in the Zoological Park in collaboration with the India Turtle Conservation Program (ITCP) .
Officials highlighted that the Asian Giant Tortoise is a critically endangered reptile, native to North East India, and protected under Schedule-I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (Amended 2022) .
