Imphal, September 01 2025:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider holding a single meeting in either Imphal or Churachandpur during his potential visit, cautioning that separate meetings could inadvertently legitimize the concept of "Kukiland" or "Zalengam" .
The WMC, in a letter signed by its chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam, continued that Imphal, being the capital, belongs to every community of Manipur, and a gathering there would send a clear message of unity.
Manipur is an ancient land with a rich and unified history, the Council said and added that the State's indigenes would not appreciate any move that may appear to dilute the integrity and idea of Manipur.
The WMC alleged that Kuki militant groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact are functioning side by side with the Assam Rifles.
With their significant presence and influence, the Assam Rifles are well-positioned to play a crucial role in bringing peace and normalcy, it said.
Another pressing concern is the blockade of National Highways.
A single directive from the PM could prompt the Army and AR to take effective action against the armed Chin-Kuki groups responsible for the blockade along the National Highways, the WMC said.
