Imphal, December 29: Volunteers of Salai Taret Inat Saktam Kanba Lup have set on fire the wall calendars released by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) for the year 2007 along with giving strong warning against anybody who sell the said calendars or put up the same in their houses.

Around 10 such wall calendars reportedly seized by its volunteers were set on fire at Keishampat Thiyam Leikai area at around 4 pm today even as one of the spokespersons of the Lup explained to the people why such a extreme step has been taken up.

According to the spokespersons, confusion has been being caused among the people for the last many years by including two separate days for the Cheiraoba festival which is being celebrated as the new year day since time immemorial.

In view of this, on various occasion representatives of the Lup had met the Chief Minister and the Arts and Culture Minister for including only one day for the festival in the wall calendar to be published by the Government in 2007.Despite that, the wall calendar brought out by the DIPR for the 2007 mentioned two days for Cheiraoba festival.

So the wall calendars have been set on fire in protest, the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson informed that the calendars who have been set on fire today were seized from Rajesh Book Store and Nisha Store located along Governor Road.

The Lup would continue to launch it protest, the spokesperson said while warning that any person who were found selling the calendar in the shops or used the same in their houses, offices, etc should be ready to face the eventuality.
