Imphal, August 29 2016: The first quarter meeting of the State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee which has been set up to directly monitor the six different projects taken up under Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department was held today.

Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister M Okendro who chaired the meeting fumed over improper implementation of MGNREGS by district administrations even after the release of Rs 277 crore by the Ministry concerned as the first instalment of 2016-17 fiscal.

Committee Co-Chairman and Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir, MPs Thangso Baite and Dr T Meinya, MLAs Paonam Brojen, Jamhenglung Panmei, Dr I Ibohalbi, K Sarat, DCs/ADCs and other high ranking officials took part in the meeting.

M Okendro said that the Centre released only Rs 255 crore for MGNREGS in four instalments in the last fiscal year.

As such, the Government could give works for only 16 days, the Minister said.

This year, the Ministry concerned has released Rs 277 crore in the first installment, Okendro said and added that the State Government is planning to provide atleast 70 days work to job card holders this fiscal year.

Of the Rs 274.74 crore provided to the different till August 26, only Rs 59.60 crore (17.97% of the total amount) could be utilised so far, the Minister said.

As such, only works for 11 mandays could be given to the job card holders so far, he said.

Okendro said that 8459 houses would be constructed under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana this year.

Stating that Chandel, Imphal East and Senapati districts have however got a special package to construct more houses, Okendro said that the State Government is planning to submit a proposal to the Centre for the same package with respect to Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts as well.

Progress of the works taken up under MGNREGS, National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), DRDA Administration, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Indira Awaas Yojana and State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) were examined at the meeting.
