Imphal, October 24 2025:
All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) celebrated its 3 6th foundation day at GM Hall, Imphal today.
Manipur University Professor Dr Toijam Tampha, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president S Memcha, AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Y Kunjarani said AMAWOVA was founded on October 24, 1989 .
The objective of the association is to bring about a just and developed society where both men and women are equal, she said.
Throughout the history of Manipur, women have played important roles in protecting and shaping the society, she said, citing Nupi Lan as an example.
Since its merger with India in 1949, Manipur has been facing many issues, she said.
The increasing influx of outsiders and illegal immigrants has been posing a threat to the culture, tradition, identity and the very existence of the indigenous people, she said.
Kunjarani also commented on the recent demolition of the Manipuri Rajbari in Shillong, and said it was aimed at erasing the history of the State.
The Manipuri Rajbari in Redlands, Shillong was demolished for "reconstruction" on October 8 .
The Redlands building was where Maharaja Bodhchandra signed the "controversial" Manipur Merger Agreement.
The demolition of such a place integral to Manipur's history is an attempt to erase the history, Kunjarani said.
She also spoke about the "draconian" Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958, and said the people of the State including women have suffered under it.
To face the challenges facing Manipur and the society, womenfolk must come together and unite.
AMAWOVA as an organisation will play crucial roles in uplifting the women society and Manipur as a whole, she added.
"Liklang Pareng", a musical programme was also held as part of the celebration.
