Purul Atongba village celebrates Poumai Laonii festival

Purul Atongba village, Senapati district celebrated Poumai Laonii festival, 2025, a post plantation festival on Tuesday.
The event was graced by Kuba Peter, President, Naga people's Organization (NPO) as the chief guest, PL Jacob, Chairman, Hiiduna Council as the guest of honour, K.Lemo, Headman, Purul Atongba village as the chief host, Victor Danii, Chairman, Purul Atongba Village Authority and H Pousheru, Chairperson, Purul Atongba Women Society as the special guests respectively.
It may be mentioned that Laonii Festival is a significant celebration of the Poumai Naga tribe, observed after completing paddy transplantation.
This sacred festival is marked by various socio-religious activities, rejuvenating the minds and health of the community after their hard work in rice transplantation.
The festival lasts for 5-9 days, varying across three different circles such as Chilivai, Lepaona and Paomata.
The event includes traditional feasts, folk songs, and dances, promoting social interaction and family reunions.
The festival has a custom where meat is given to younger sisters married to other villages, symbolizing blessing and remembrance.
Laonii Festival plays a vital role in preserving the cultural identity of the Poumai Naga tribe, promoting unity and cooperation among community members.
The Poumai Naga tribe, primarily residing in Manipur's Senapati district and parts of Nagaland, observes this festival with great enthusiasm, showcasing their rich cultural heritage.
The festivals witnessed different competition events including folk songs, horn blowing, mouth string, duet, poem recitation, solo and traditional wrestling.
A special individual prize for the best traditional attire during the festival for both male and female will be awarded on the closing day.
