Imphal, July 23 2025:
The Zeliangrong Union (ZU) Imphal Zone and Kabui Mothers Association Manipur (KAMA) have expressed strong opposition to the FIR lodged against Golrnei Ranjita Kabui, general secretary of KAMA, by an individual identified as Kipgen from the Kuki community.
The complaint, filed on May 28, 2025, at Kangpokpi Police Station, pertains to a speech delivered by Ranjita Kabui during the National Youth Convention on "Democracy, Dialogue, and Co-existence", organised by the Manipur University Students' Union at MU Court Hall on September 9 and 10, 2023 .
As per a joint statement issued by ZU Imphal Zone and KAMA, Ranjita Kabui's remarks were made in the context of the prevailing socio-political situation in Manipur and should be understood as such.
The ZU Imphal Zone and KAMA asserted that Ranjit Kabui's comments were a reflection of the ground reality and historical narrative surrounding the Kuki community's origin in Manipur.
"Since the inception of Kuki in Manipur, they blatantly lied and made numerous fictitious histories of Manipur, claiming to be indigenous people.
The Kuki people had no correlation in the history of Manipur as they are not indigenous tribe of Manipur", it added.
The ZU Imphal Zone and KAMA also recalled a past incident involving one Mark T Haokip, president of the International Human Rights Association, Manipur and coordinator in Myanmar, who on November 23, 2021, allegedly defamed freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu by calling her a "fake freedom fighter and accused her as criminal and she was imprisoned for her crime" .
Stating that Mark T Haokip's remarks were an insult to the Zeliangrong Naga community, the ZU Imphal Zone and KAMA clarified that Ranjita Kabui's speech was a rebuttal aimed solely at Mark T Haokip, not the entire Kuki community.
"Therefore the complaint/FIR filed against Ranjita Kabui is unreasonable and not legally sustainable", it concluded.
