World Bamboo Day celebrated at MU

The Department of Forestry, Manipur University, in collaboration with INTACH Manipur Chapter and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, celebrated World Bamboo Day 2024 at the Department of Forestry.
Manipur University, Canchipur, under the theme "Next Generation Bamboo: Solution, Innovation and Design" .
The event held on Wednesday was graced by Dr Khwairakpam Romesh Singh, Faculty, Department of Forestry, MU and Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, president of AIMS as presidium members, said a release issued by AIMS.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Salam Dilip, Guest Faculty, Department of Forestry, MU, elaborated on bamboo's future-forward potential, how it would buck most challenges contemporary civilisation is confronting, from climate change and deforestation to perpetuated economic inequality.
He also discussed innovations in products made from bamboo, including its use in building construction, furniture, textiles, and even energy generation.
Dr Salam Dilip also encouraged all to consider bamboo as the foundation for future strategies in both environmental and economic operations.
The programme culminated with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Rajkumar Chingkhei, Guest Faculty, Department of Environmental Science, MU.
As part of the observation, a bamboo plantation drive was conducted.
It was actively participated by faculty members and students of the university.
An extempore speech competition was also held and cash awards were presented to the top three winners namely Lanrilu Dangmei (1st), Korymayum Subhani (2nd) and Soraisam Hira (3rd) .
