Opportunity plan to defeat Cong in bye-election

Imphal, January 19, 2011: Opposition political parties are moving ahead with strategies to defeat the Congress candidate in the Konthoujam bye-election to be held on February 14 by extending support to a candidate with the best prospective.

BJP, Manipur Pradesh president Sh Shantikumar revealed that his party is in touch with other like minded opposition parties to chalk out a strategy to defeat the ruling Congress.

It is the stand of the party to get into consultations to field a candidate representing all opposition parties in the bye-election.

To defeat the Congress and CPI candidates in the bye-election is the firm stand of the party, he said informing that members of a high powered committee of the party had visited Kongthoujam Kendra to consider opinions of the electors.

Local leaders of the party also took part in the hearing of people's opinions.

The central committee of the party will discuss the report of the high power committee which would be submitted shortly, the president said.

He went on to observe that they are expecting Kh Ranjit, a former lecturer of DM College , who stood second in the 2007 general election in the constituency to be the strong contender in the bye-election.

Kim Gangte, the president of state unit Trinamool Congress has informed BJP that Ranjit would be contesting the election as the official nominee of the party and she requested the support all opposition parties.

A meeting of the election committee of the party to be held shortly will discuss the proposal and takes a final decision in this regard.

At the same time, two persons have also approached for contesting the bye-election as BJP official nominee.

Their proposals are also important even though the party is yet not discussed about fielding its candidate even though it has a firm decision to defeat Congress candidate in the forthcoming bye-election, Shantikumar said.

Meanwhile, MPP is also discussing the matter of Kongthoujam bye-election seriously.

A meeting of the officer functionaries held recently had discussed the matter and another meeting of the working committee scheduled on January 21 will again discuss the matter.

So far, MPP has no plan for sending out its candidate in the fray but committed that the party will extend support to a candidate other than CPI to defeat Congress candidate, MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang reveals.

The party will take a definite decision with regard to its stance on the bye-election after talks with other opposition parties, Nimaichand further said.

The main opposition party in the state Assembly, NCP, CPI (M) and NNP, the party which Ranjit contested the election in 2007 are still remaining silent without expressing their decisions with regard to the bye-election.

For the RJD, they had already decided to support Congress candidate.
