Betel leaves seized, burnt at Kwakta

The Apunba Nupi Lup (ANUL), Bishnupur district, along with its Moirang and Kwakta branches and civil society organisations (CSOs) of Kwakta area, seized 13 baskets of betel leaves allegedly brought from Churachandpur through the German Road and later burnt them at Thingel Leikai, Kwakta Municipal Ward No 7.According to ANUL, the consignment belonging to one non-Manipuri named Raghunath Prasad was seized at around 3 pm on August 16 while it was being transported towards Kwakta from Churachandpur through the German Road.
The organisation described the route as an important passage allegedly used by Kuki insurgents for movement.
Speaking in this connection, ANUL Moirang Branch vice-president Kumam Ongbi Bina said ANUL Bishnupur district and CSOs had been imposing restrictions on the transportation and sale of items considered harmful amid the prevailing economic, difficulties in the State.
Bina said following the seizure.
Raghunath was asked to appear within 48 hours for a discussion aimed at reaching a mutual understanding and to ensure that such items were not transported through the route in future.
However, she alleged that Raghunath responded disrespectfully and used foul language, following which the seized items were burnt.
She added that ANUL and the CSOs would continue their efforts to restrict the movement of items they consider harmfill in the area.
