Imphal, March 17 2026:
The Waishen Marin Shemgatpa Lup (WMSL) has stated that the flooding in parts of Keishamthong and Sagolband Assembly Constituencies, following the recent spell of rainfall, highlights the need for regular maintenance of drainage channels and canals.
In a statement, the WSML stated that a joint meeting of all committees formed to safeguard Waishel Marin will be held soon to initiate a series of movements to urge the Government to take necessary action to ensure the smooth flow of water in the canal (Waishel Maril).
The group argued that waterlogging in parts of Keishamthong and Sagolband Assembly Constituencies, despite the Nambul and Imphal Rivers being well below their warning levels, is evidence of artificial flooding caused by the lack of proper developmental works.
WMSL added that new office bearers of Wasihen-Marin Shemgatpa Lup for Nambol AC have been appointed during a function held at Kha Sanjenbam Awang Leikai on March 15.The speakers at the function expressed concern over the shrinking of Waishel Maril, urging people living nearby not to encroach upon the canal.
They also mentioned that water is scarcely visible in parts of the canal, which are covered by aquatic plants.
Emphasising the importance of Waishel Maril, they urged all concerned to refrain from carrying out development work on the canal solely for profit.
