Blast near MR campus: Two including a woman hurt; scooter smashed

Imphal, June 16 2009: A powerful bomb blew up a scooter parked near an MR canteen on the road side running between the Manipur Police Housing Corporation and the HQ complex of the 2nd Bn Manipur Rifles at Kabow Leikai here this morning which left at least two persons including a woman injured.

The Lanheiba group of KCP(MC)has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The bomb was fitted on a scooter.

The group claimed that its cadres of 5th Lanjaba Unit carried out the bomb blast.

It was apparently aimed at destroying the canteen which sells Indian made foreign liquors.

The powerful bomb which was fitted on a scooter parked about 50 feet from a canteen run by a non-local exploed around 9.15 this morning.

The bomb was so powerful that it caused significant damage to the structure of the canteen.

Police officers who rushed there and investigated the blast site believed that the IED which was fitted on the scooter was exploded using a remote control device.

Many splinters were found all over.

One of the window panes was found detached from the panel on the impact of the blast.

A36 year-old woman, Akoijam Sunitibala who runs a PCO some 200 feet from the blast site and another employee of the MPHC, Paolen Kamei (55) sustained injuries by the impact.

Sunitibala sustained injury at her left calf by splinters of the bomb after piercing her shop while Paolen was hit by splinter while he was sitting inside a hotel at the gate of his office which also around 200 feet away from the blast site.

The woman has been evacuated at JN Hospital and operation to take out the splinters remained stuck to her calf has been performed successfully this afternoon at around 3.40 pm.

Paolen also sustained splinters injury at the right thigh.

He has been treated at Unit Hospital of the 2nd MR located inside the 2nd MR complex.

His condition is stated to be stable and out of danger.

In the blast the scooter was total destroyed in the blast leaving only the front portion.

A pit was also erupted on the ground.

In the aftermath of the blast, a strong team of the Imphal west police led by SP, L Kailun rushed to the spot and took stoke of the situation.

Additional SP Dr Jhalajit, SDPO Ibomcha and gazette office of Imphal west police commandos, Krishnatombi also arrived at the spot.

Police have registered a case and started investigation into the case, sources said.
