Imphal, September 10 2025:
In a pioneering move towards promoting health and well-being within judicial institutions, the High Court of Manipur today marked a historic milestone with the simultaneous inauguration of Medical Dispensary Units across all District Court Complexes in Manipur.
As per a release issued by the High Court of Manipur, the formal inauguration ceremony was held at the Cheirap Court Complex, Imphal, where Justice K Somashekar, Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur, inaugurated the Medical Dispensary Unit.
The event was graced by Justice A Bimol Singh and Justice A Guneshwar Sharma, Judges of the High Court of Manipur, along with Ojesh Mutum, Registrar General of the High Court.
The Chief Justice also virtually inaugurated similar Medical Dispensary Units at 15 Court Complexes across the State, thereby extending much-needed medical support and facilities to judicial officers, court staff, members of the Bar, litigants, and the public.
Present on the occasion were distinguished dignitaries, including Nungshitombi Athokpam, Commissioner (Law); Kengoo Zuringla, Special Secretary (Health & Family Welfare); Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services; senior judicial officers, members of the legal fraternity, and court staff.
In his inaugural address, Justice K Somashekar underlined the significance of the initiative, noting that while courts are institutions of justice, they are also workplaces where thousands of people spend their daily lives- often in stressfill and demanding circumstances.
He emphasized that a judicial system that looks after the health of its people is a system that demonstrates care, sensitivity, and inclusiveness.
He cited the Supreme Court's directions in Pradhyuman Bisht v Union of India, which stress the necessity of immediate emergency medical measures, including ambulances and modernized medical facilities within court complexes.
The establishment of these dispensaries stands as a direct and meaningful response to that guidance.
The Chief Justice lauded the support extended by the Government of Manipur, especially the Health Department, and acknowledged the dedicated efforts of judicial officers, Registry officials, and members of the Bar in translating this vision into reality.
The welcome address was delivered by Yumkham Rother, District & Sessions Judge, Imphal West, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Ningthoujam Lanleima, District & Sessions Judge, Imphal East.
Notably, each dispensary will be staffed by a Medical Officer and support personnel, deployed through the concerned Chief Medical Officers as per directions from the Director of Health Services, Manipur.
These units will offer first aid, primary medical consultation, and basic health support to those within the court ecosystem.
