Angel Children Hospital & Vaccination Centre has successfully performed a risky surgery on a very low birth weight (VLBW) baby, weighing just 1.03 Kg and born at 32 weeks of gestation, said the hospital in statement today.
Born to a couple from Lumboikhongnangkhong, Imphal West, the infant was diagnosed with neonatal intestinal obstruction with acyanotic congenital heart disease, hyperbilirubinemia and severe sepsis.
The infant was admitted to the Angel Children Hospital & Vaccination Centre, Uripok Khumanthem Leikai on May 27 .
Paediatric surgery consultation was taken under Senior Paediatric Surgeon Dr Toijam Soni, and the baby was stabilised and diagnosed as a case of ileal atresia.
A team led by the Surgeon performed the surgery for correction of neonatal obstruction on June 3 .
Dr Toijam Soni Lyngdoh said such a surgery is challenging especially on small babies with VLBW, immature lungs, immature liver function and small sizes of the organs involved.
The hospital said the postoperative period was managed by a highly dedicated team of Paediatricians led by Dr Taorem Yaikhomba and dedicated NICU staff.
The baby recovered successfully and uneventfully discharged June 22, added the hospital.
