International Day of Indigenous Women & Girls celebrated

Chandel, September 05 2026: The All Tribal Disables' Union Manipur (ATDUM), in association with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chandel, organised a celebration of the first International Day of Indigenous Women & Girls cum legal awareness programme on women's rights at Aimol Tampak village community hall, Tengnoupal district on September 4 .

The programme was organised to create awareness among indigenous women and girls about their legal rights, protection from violence and discrimination, and the various legal remedies and support mechanisms available to them, said a press note by ATDUM general secretary.

The programme was attended by T Chuongsin Koireng, general secretary ATDUM; TK Adim, president of Maring Napuiya Yinglam (MNY); and Mataiwiliu Newmai, women coordinator, Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), as the presidium members.

Delivering the keynote address, T Chuongsin Koireng highlighted the significance of celebrating the first International Day of Indigenous Women and Girls, which aims to recognise and celebrate the leadership, contributions and achievements of Indigenous women and girls across regions, while promoting the implementation of CEDAW General Recommendation No.39 and inclusion of indigenous women and girls with disabilities, contribute equally, lead their communities, and collectively build movements for inclusion ensuring their effective and meaningful participation in all aspect of life from grassroot to global level.

In the technical session Damgam Khaling, women and child rights activist, deliberated on the topic "Women's Rights and Legal Protection." She highlighted various rights of women.

She stressed the importance of knowing the law, recognising violations of rights and seeking timely assistance when faced with violence, discrimination or other forms of injustice.

The resource person, Keishang Kopham Kanshowa, Panel Advocate, DLSA Chandel, also delivered on "Understanding the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023: Legal Protection of Women and Girls".

He explained relevant provisions of the BNS and discussed the legal protection available to women and girls against various offences.

An interactive session was also held, during which participants raised questions and discussed issues concerning women's rights, legal protection and access to justice.

The resource persons responded to the queries and provided practical guidance on seeking legal assistance.

Around 80 men and women from Aimol Tampak and neighbouring villages attended the programme.
