Imphal, July 04 2024:
The Moidangpok Khullen Women's Society (Nishaband), Meira Paibi, has submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, through the Governor, seeking her intervention in addressing critical issues of the State.
The memorandum submitted to the President of India on Thursday highlighted critical issues of the State such as the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC), suspension of Operation (SoO), de-recognition of "Any Kuki Tribes" in the Scheduled Tribe list and arrest of narco-terrorists.
In the memorandum, the society emphasized the need to update the NRC to identify and deport illegal immigrants who have illegally acquired Indian citizenship and settled in Manipur.
The society also called for immediate abrogation of the SoO agreement signed between the Government of India and Kuki militant groups.
The society claimed that the SoO agreement, while initially well-intentioned, undermined the rule of law and compromised national security by legitimizing groups they consider to be representing illegal immigrants.
The society also urged the Government to reconsider and revoke the recognition of "Any Kuki Tribes" as Scheduled Tribe and added that recognition of ST should be reserved for genuine tribal communities of the country to prevent misappropriation of benefits meant for these groups.
Further, the memorandum demanded an immediate end to the harassment and arrest of village volunteers who have been defending innocent civilians from the attacks of armed "Kuki narco-terrorists".
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference today at Manipur Press Club, Khundrakpam Binashakhi Devi, general secretary of Moidangpok Khullen Women's Society, said that as mothers, it is becoming too overbearing trying to protect their children all the time.
She continued that it is high time for all the political leaders, MLAs, Ministers and MPs to come to set aside their differences and work together to end the prolonged conflict which has been going on for more than a year.
"It is not the time for infighting, all the indigenous people should come together to protect the State and contribute in the effort towards returning peace & normalcy in Manipur", she added.
