"Handloom, handicrafts key to strengthening Manipur's economy"

Imphal, August 01 2026: Handloom and Handicrafts can play a major role in strengthening the State's economy, said Chingtam Luwang, president, Handloom Promotion Council, Manipur.

He was speaking at the 27th State Handloom Day organised by the Handloom Promotion Council, Manipur under the aegis of the Department of Handlooms & Textiles at Khamba Hall, Castle Hotel, Palace Compound.

Chingtam Luwang said Manipur's handloom tradition carries integrity and cultural identity.

"Cultural integrity is already embedded in our handloom.

Economic integrity can also grow from handloom and handicrafts", he stated.

Highlighting the Government's efforts to promote weavers, he said State Handloom Day is observed every year to encourage artisans.

On the occasion, 129 distinguished weavers from different districts were honoured with awards to boost their morale.

He urged the State Government to give greater attention to weavers, adding that if supported properly, each district can produce more skilled weavers than before.

He expressed concern that many weavers are leaving the profession for other livelihoods and called for strong interventions to retain them.

The function was attended by L Dwijamani, former GM, DIC; Sukumar Haobam, panelist consultant, Ukhrul District Handloom & Handicraft Co-operative Federation; National awardee M Radhamani; N Sandhyarani, Financial Advisor, Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles; and social activist H Sujata as presidium members.
