PIB Imphal's workshop underscores benefits of Khelo India initiatives

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Imphal organised a one-day district media workshop (Varta) on the theme "Revamped Khelo India Scheme" for journalists in Bishnupur district today.
The Varta is part of PIB Imphal's outreach initiative to enhance awareness of the Government of India's flagship welfare programmes and familiarise district-level media professionals with various Government initiatives.
The programme was also organised as part of the observance of "12 Years of Governance", marking the completion of 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure at the Centre.
Dr Engam Pame, Additional Director General, PIB, Regional Office, Imphal, and Moirangthem Rustom Singh, Assistant Director, CBC, Field Office, Chandel, were present at the inaugural session of the Varta held at Chingmei Cafe Resort, Maibam Lotpa Ching.
Laishram Samritya Singh, Assistant Director, Sports Authority of India (SAI), NERC, Imphal, attended the event as a resource person.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Engam Pame underscored the crucial role of the media in bridging the gap between the Government and citizens and in taking society forward in a positive direction.
He said the Varta serves as an interactive platform for factual information-sharing, constructive dialogue and direct engagement with officials associated with the implementation of Government schemes.
Such interactions, he added, help address misconceptions, curb misinformation and improve public awareness.
Laishram Samritya Singh, Assistant Director, SAI NERC, Imphal, made a detailed presentation on various aspects and provisions of the Revamped Khelo India Scheme.
Speaking about India's sporting aspirations, the resource person said the country is targeting 30 to 35 medals, including 12 to 14 gold medals, at the 2036 Olympic Games, with the objective of entering the list of the world's top 10 sporting nations.
He said India is further targeting 90 to 100 medals, including 35 to 40 gold medals, at the 2048 Olympic Games, with the ambition of improving its position from the top 10 to the top five sporting nations.
Launched in 2017 to create a strong foundation for Indian sports, the Khelo India Scheme aims to nurture sporting champions, inspire a culture of fitness and strengthen India's sporting ecosystem.
The scheme seeks to position India among the world's leading sporting nations in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, he said.
Two sportspersons, Sorokhaibam Melody Devi and Lamabam Nilam Devi, who have benefited from the Khelo India initiative also participated in the programme.
Sorokhaibam Melody Devi, a national-level archer, was officially inducted into the elite Khelo India Archery discipline in May 2026 .
At the 37th Junior and 35th Senior State Archery Championships, she won a gold medal in the senior women's team event and secured a silver medal in the junior women's 70-metre individual category.
Lamabam Nilam Devi, a weightlifter, has competed at the National level in the 53-kg and 55-kg categories.
She won a bronze medal in the women's 55-kg category at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.
She also won three silver medals at the Asian Youth and Junior Championships held in Doha, Qatar, in December 2024 .
