Thoubal, July 30 2025:
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Killing of Khangembam Ningol Maibam Ongbi Samita of Tekcham has strongly condemned the Thoubal District Hospital over the tragic post-delivery death of a mother, citing gross negligence by the attending doctors and nurses.
In a sit-in protest held today at Tekcham Mayai Leikai Community Hall, the JAC demanded accountability and immediate punitive action against those responsible.
Speaking during the protest, Khundongbam Meratombi Leima, chairman of the JAC called the incident a deeply disheartening moment for every woman.
"Every girl, if married, has to become a mother one day, and this incident has triggered widespread fear among women.
We pray such a tragedy never occurs again," she said.
Meratombi expressed strong resentment that the mother could have been saved if proper postnatal care had been provided.
She alleged that, despite complaints, the woman was left unattended for nearly an hour after delivery, which led to her untimely demise.
She demanded the hospital be held accountable and called for the suspension of the doctors and nurses involved, citing their gross negligence.
During the protest, placards bearing messages such as "We Condemn the Incident", "Irresponsible Doctor and Nurses Involved Must Be Suspended", "Handover Post-Mortem Report Immediately", "We Want Justice", etc, were used by the demonstrators.
Regarding the incident, the JAC has presented a charter of demands, which includes, a full enquiry to be conducted within two days, termination of the doctors, nurses and staff involved, compensation for the bereaved family, and the Manipur Government to take responsibility for the deceased's two young children.
The JAC has further warned that unless their demands are met, the deceased's body will not be claimed, and the agitation will be intensified in collaboration with various civil society organisations (CSOs) .
