HIV/AIDS awareness programme conducted in Ukhrul villages

Ukhrul, May 28 2026:
A one-day awareness programme on HIV/AIDS was conducted at Kasomtang Community Hall and Awungtang Hall of Hungpung village in Ukhrul district on Thursday.
The programme was organised by the Ukhrul District Mission Management Unit (DMMU) and Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) in collaboration with the Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS).
Speaking at the programme, Horeisung Khamrang, District Mission Manager, Ukhrul MSRLM, said that the awareness initiative primarily focused on women Self Help Group (SHG) members from villages in Ukhrul district.
He stressed the importance of treating HIV-infected persons with dignity and equality, stating that stigma and discrimination only aggravate the social challenges associated with the disease.
He urged womenfolk to support and accommodate HIV-positive individuals without prejudice for the welfare of society as a whole.
Dr Yuithingla Vashum, District AIDS Control Officer, DAPCU/MACS, Ukhrul and Kamjong, conducted the technical session during the programme.
She highlighted the current HIV/AIDS data and information compiled by the district health departments of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
Dr Yuithingla also educated the participants on various modes of HIV transmission, including blood transmission and sexual contact.
She stated that HIV/AIDS can be prevented through early testing and timely treatment, thereby ensuring a healthier and HIV-free society.
Emphasising the need to eliminate stigma and misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS, she urged the participants to undergo regular HIV testing.
As part of the programme, HIV testing was also conducted by a medical team led by Dr Yuithingla Vashum.
More than 70 SHG members from Ukhrul/ Hunphun village and 67 SHG members from Hungpung village participated in the awareness programme.
