Evict encroachers from reserved forest : Locals

Imphal, September 27 2026: Local clubs and Meira Paibi Lups of Lamlai have served a 24-hour ultimatum to the Government to stop and evict all illegal structures including a road being constructed under the Khamenlok-Gwaltabi Khamenlok-Gwaltabi Reserved Forest area.

This demand of the locals came hardly a day after an organisation flagged the ongoing construction of a road on Natumching near Sanasabi.

The Youth United Voluntary Association had said that people belonging to the Kuki community were using heavy machinery to construct a road in the reserved forest area.

At a sit-in protest organised at the Yaingangpokpi Keithel today, locals said the Forest Department and the Government must halt the construction of the road and evict all illegal structures from the reserved forest area within 24 hours.

Paradise Club Gwaltabi secretary Phairembam Rajesh said people belonging to the Kuki community are constructing a road using excavators and building houses for settlement on the Sanasabi Mamang Ching, which falls under the reserved forest area.

n the year 1990, as per a survey of the Forest Department, there were only 6 settlements near the reserved forest area.

Now, the number of settlements in the area has grown to over 40, he said.

Resolutions taken during the sit-in protest said that the Government should evict all illegal structures in the Khamenlok-Gwaltabi Reserved Forest area within 24 hours and take strong legal actions against people involved in the illegal constructions.
