Jamail Singh underscores importance of learning Korean

Imphal, November 23 2020: While highlighting the Republic of Korea's increasing economic power in the world, Manipur University (MU) administrator Jamail Singh has underscored the importance of learning Korean language in Manipur and India.

He was speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural programme of BA (Honours) in Korean language held today at the university's Department of Foreign Language.

Stating that the economic power of the Republic of Korea has ever remained strong and bilateral trade between the said country and India has also been increasing, Jarnail Singh observed that the demand for people who could understand and exchange conversation in Korean Language will be increasing.

He added that earning an appropriate academic degree in Korean language will go a long way in terms of employability and business related with Korea.

Delivering speech through video conference, Republic of Korea's Ambassador to India, Shin Bong-Kil claimed that the bilateral co-operation between Korea and India, particularly in the field of education are gaining new momentum.

He said that there is a growing demand for learning Korean language in India and added that many leading and prestigious universities in the country have been offering Korean language courses.

Informing that the Government of India has introduced Korean language as the second language option in the secondary level of education since July this year, Shin Bong-Kil lauded that India Government's decision has moved a major step forward in the consistent effort of promoting Korean language in India.

While remarking that the teaching faculties in Manipur University are competent and experienced ones, the Korean Ambassador expressed hope that the Bachelor degree in Korean language course being offered in Manipur University will turn out to be a unique and popular foreign language course.

Korea Foundation visiting Professor to MU, Professor Hyun Kyung Lee conveyed that the demand for Korean language education began in 1990s with the advent of many Korean companies in India and as the political relations between the two countries started flourishing.

She added that MU and Jawaharlal Nehru University are the only two universities in India which currently offer BA (Honours) Korean language programme.

Professor S Imoba Singh of MU's Department of Foreign Language and Dean of Humanities Professor, N Aruna Devi too attended the function as guests of honour.

Diploma certificates for learning Korean language and scholarships sponsored by Shinhan Bank were also distributed to students during the function.
