Legal awareness workshop conducted in Ukhrul

A one-day legal awareness workshop on "Manipur Village Authority Act 1956 and Economic Development" was conducted for the headmen of Tangkhul villages at Hamleikhong community hall, Ukhrul.
Speaking as the functional president of the workshop, social activist Ashang Kasar stressed on the need to resolve any kind of issue amicably and peacefully.
This will bring tangible change in society, he said.
Electing good leaders as people's representatives in the Government is foremost for all.
This will protect the rights of every person as provided by the Constitution and ensure transparent governance, added the social activist.
Meanwhile, resource person Daniel Ramsan, Senior Advocate and Chairman of (IT) Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) deliberated on the Village Authority Act 1956.It is a State law that governs the constitution and functioning of village authorities in the hill areas of Manipur.
It was enacted to consolidate and establish the Village Authority, which is composed of the village chief and his councillors with the goal to oversee village administration.
Under this Act, the Village Authority is entitled and authorised to enforce law and order in their respective villages, said the Senior Advocate.
Ramthing Kasar, Founder Director, Go North- East Mission enlightened the gathering on how to establish a "staple economy" through judicious utilization of local resources.
The key components for economic development are human resource creation, promotion of trade, fostering entrepreneurship, and improving education and skill development to create a productive workforce, he said.
A panel discussion was also held on the Manipur Village Authority Act 1956 during the noon session.
Over 60 persons including headmen and village leaders participated in the workshop organised by the National Environment & Education Development Society in collaboration with Tangkhul Awunga Long & District Legal Services Authority, Ukhrul.
