Nupi Lup demands NRC with 1951 as base year

Imphal, September 22 2026: Demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year, no census without NRC and rehabilitation of IDPs to their original homes, Kshetrigao Nupi Lamjing Lup staged a sit-in protest at Meitei Shanglen, Thambalkhong today.

The protest was organised as part of the agitations launched by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) .

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Lup secretary Pangambam Anita said the people of Kshetrigao want to send a clear message to the Centre and the State Government that NRC must be updated with 1951 as the base year, census should not be conducted without NRC and all internally displaced persons must be resettled at their original places.

She warned that if the Government goes ahead with the census without updating NRC, Kshetrigao Nupi Lamjing Lup will not accept it and will launch more intense forms of agitation.

The Lup extends full support to the agitations spearheaded by the JFD, she added.

Leaders of the JFD and members of different organisations also joined the sit-in protest.
