Imphal, June 21 2026:
With Manipur recording 1.23 road accidents daily, often causing deaths and injuries, the Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre (IDTRC) today launched a two-day 'Refreshers Course for Drivers' to promote safe driving and curb accidents.
The programme, held under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Road Safety Initiative, began at IDTRC's conference hall in Top Dusara, Yaralpat, Imphal East.
The programme was graced by dignitaries, including IDTRC Advisory Committee Chairman and retired IAS officer M Lakshmikumar, Principal-cum-Project Consultant BK Sharma, Manipur Fire Service Director K Nabachandra, and IDTRC Member Secretary Shantikumar Naorem.
Speaking at the symposium, BK Sharma said CID Crime Branch records from the past seven years show Manipur averages 1.23 accidents daily.
Poor road conditions, lack of proper road markings, nonadherence to lane driving, indiscipline, and drunk driving are major causes, he said.
He noted frequent horn violations in silent zones like Raj Bhavan, Secretariat, schools, and hospitals, and stressed that drivers often ignore road signs and symbols.
BK Sharma added that fines of Rs 1,000 are prescribed for illegal horn use and modified silencers, Rs 10,000 for blocking ambulances or fire services, and Rs 5,000 for driving without a licence.
He urged drivers to follow lane discipline, noting that emergency lanes are meant for ambulances and VIPs, not public transport or slow vehicles.
M Lakshmikumar said rising vehicle numbers - now over 4 lakh in Manipur - have increased traffic congestion, pollution, and safety risks, making refresher training essential.
Shantikumar Naorem said IDTRC, set up in 2016 with 100% funding from the Ministry of Transport and inaugurated in October 2024, aims to train drivers on evolving rules and save lives.
Drivers from Government departments, semi-Government bodies, public, private sectors, and NGOs are attending the course.
