Imphal, March 20: With the objective of checking road mishaps during the yaoshang festivities, the police department, Government of Manipur will conduct special drive to strictly implement certain safety norms and pull up any erring individuals against whom monetary penalties would be levied in addition to imprisonment under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, said a police statement issued by the SP of Imphal West District L Kailun today, a day ahead of the festival.

The imprisonment terms would range from three months to six and extendable to two years for repeat offenders, the statement said while the specifying the offences as - driving motor vehicles without licence/by minors; owner of vehicles allowing a minor or person without licence to drive; driving without all relevant documents; triple riding on two wheelers; non-display of registration numbers; driving under the influence of alcohol/drug; overloading of vehicle; exceeding speed limit; using mobile phone while in motion, etc.
