Public participation in resolving Manipur-India conflict discussed

Imphal, April 19 2011: Appealing the older women of the state for their active participation in resolving the Manipur-India conflict instead of living a simple day to day life, social worker Joy Nongmaithemcha urged the women section of the state to come forward and actively participate in the issue to bring a solution in the present conflict situation.

Addressing a public meeting on Public Participation in resolving Manipur-India Conflict held at Keirao Bitra Community Hall which was organised by Keirao Awang Leikai Nupising Semgat Sagatpa Lup, Joy said that the present conflict situation has taken many innocent lives in the state.

Thangjam Manorama and Rabina are some solid examples of the vicious nature of the security personnel.

Even though the incidents are hot on trail, people in the state seemed to forget the issue and came back to their normal daily life, he said.

Recalling the role of women in the history of Manipur, Joy urged them to come forward and take part in resolving the conflict until it is too late.

He said that there are many difference between India and Manipur.

Manipur got independence from the British Empire before India.

Manipur became an independent country with its own constitution which was formed as Manipur Constitution Act as soon as it got independence from the British Empire.

MK Priyobrata was the first Chief Minister of Independent Manipur.

Even by that time, India does not have its own constitution.

Unfortunately, they called the then king of Manipur Maharaj Bodhachandra to Shillong in 1949 and forced him to sign the Merger Agreement in gun point.

Since then the seed of Manipur India conflict was sowed.

Terming the proposal of a banned UG group's leader to resolve the conflict as a good proposal, Joy urged the people of the state to come forward and press the state and India government to resolve the issue by the proposed means.

NIPCO vice president, Sunil Karam also talked as a resource person.

The meeting also resolved to press the government to hold plebiscite to solve the present conflict with full public participation.

It also demanded to hand over the cases of various UG cadres including UNLF Chairman, Sanayaima's case to the state government.

It also resolved to request various international right groups and the United Nations for their cooperation in resolving the present Manipur India conflict situation.

Secretary, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj Th Rasmani, Keirao Makha Leikai Ward No 3 member Louriyambam Ajay, advisor Meira Paibee Lairembi Leikai Mutum Sakhi, Member Meira Paibee Makha Leikai and president Meira Paibee Kairao Lairembi Leikai Mutum Pramo attended the meeting as presidium members.
