TDC urges Govt to improve NH-37

Imphal, August 14 2026: The Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC) has reiterated its appeal to the State Government and the Centre to repair and reconstruct the Imphal-Jiribam road to meet the required standard of a National Highway.

Unless the NH-37 is repaired and reconstructed meeting the required standard, transport will remain choked, and Manipur will continue to face shortages of essential commodities and inflation, said TDC president Hijam Ranjit.

After the Imphal-Dimapur highway was shut down in early May due to blockades imposed by civil bodies, the Imphal-Jiribam remains the only land route for transport of fuel and essential commodities into Manipur.

The transport on the Imphal-Jiribam route, however, has been anything but smooth, Ranjit said.

Prone to landslides, several sections of the highway remain severely damaged specially during the monsoon rains.

The journey which should take only some hours is now taking days, Ranjit said.

Despite repeated appeals, the State Government and the NHIDCL have not given the attention needed.

The NHIDCL, which is engaging several firms, is not seen repairing the road on a war footing as demanded to ease commute and travel time, Ranjit added.

He said the State needs MLAs and Ministers like Ukhrul's Ram Muivah who has recently acted promptly as a leader should have to improve his region's road connectivity.

Notably, Ram Muivah had recently urged Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways to enhance constriction of the NH-102A and NH-202 .

In response, the Union Minister had instructed the Ministry to prioritise work on the highways.

"Our MLAs and Ministers should also act promptly and approach the Centre and the Ministry to improve the NH-37," Ranjit said.

Improving the NH-37 will benefit the whole of the State and the people, he added.
